About the Organizer / Coach
Sasmita Mohanty is a US Chess Player, Coach, and USCF Tournament Director who learned chess from her father at the age of 10 and went on to represent India as a National Women’s B Chess Player. With over 15 years of coaching experience, she has taught students across India, the USA, and Canada, including more than 300 children for free during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the USA, she teaches chess in elementary schools, volunteers with libraries and CMSCA in Charlotte, and leads the ChessQueen Club, (chessqueenclub.org) which conducts both online and in-person coaching as well as USCF-rated tournaments.
As a Certified USCF Tournament Director, she has served at numerous state and national events over the past three years, including US Nationals in Florida, Atlanta, New Jersey, and Chicago, and she actively collaborates with prominent clubs such as the Caveman Chess Club (Chicago), Charlotte Chess Club, Columbia Chess Club, Raleigh Chess Club, and Ballantyne Chess Klub. A strong advocate for youth chess development, Sasmita is especially dedicated to empowering girls through chess, encouraging confidence, boldness, and resilience. She believes chess is not just a game but a powerful tool for building focus, leadership, and strength, and she finds her greatest joy in sharing her knowledge with children and inspiring them to grow into confident and strong individuals.
